The Subject: Organizing racing info in a database.

Hello Al, handicappers-
As described in my Guest Message, I'm an Upstate New York based
handicapper who concentrates on Belmont, Saratoga and Gulfstream.
I am willing to talk racing anytime, especially trainer patterns,
pedigree and betting strategies. I'm currently following the Belmont
meet and use ITS pp's and BRIS charts. I keep an updated,
alphabetically sorted list of runners at the meet to help identify key
races (not a great advantage anymore, as the DRF now tells you what
the key races are), and am trying to come up with a way to manipulate
my downloaded BRIS charts into a database. I need some advice on
how to do this, where to start, etc. I have better files for last
year's meets that I followed (trainer files, race files), but I had
to manually enter everything from DRFs. This year I have all of this
downloaded information but I need help finding ways to edit and
organize it.
I currently do everything in Microsoft Excel, but am under the
impression that I need to use a database program like Microsoft Access
or something similar.
If you'd like to talk handicapping or have any advice for me on
organizing my downloaded racing information, please contact me. I'd
like to be able to come up with a template to shoot info into so I
can start rockin' and rollin' when Saratoga opens.
